Abandoned cart emails: why three beat one.
Someone adds a product to their basket, then gets distracted. A single reminder catches some of those people. A short sequence of three catches more, because each email does a different job.
Email 1: Remind
Send it soon after they leave, typically within an hour or two. Show exactly what they left behind, keep the copy short and make one button obvious. No discount yet.
Email 2: Reassure
A day or so later, answer the doubts that stop people buying: delivery times and costs, returns, sizing and reviews. A good second email removes friction rather than adding pressure.
Email 3: Nudge
A couple of days after that, give a reason to act now. That might be a gentle deadline, low stock or, if it suits your margins, a small incentive. Use incentives sparingly so customers don’t learn to abandon baskets on purpose.
Get the details right
- Stop the flow the moment they buy.
- Exclude people who have purchased recently.
- Show product images and prices.
- Check it looks right on mobile.
- Test timings and subject lines one at a time.
